In House Competition

Picture
This past weekend, the Sudbury MMA Team attended an In-House competition at Action Martial Arts and Fitness.  It was well attended with other academies from all over Northern Ontario including Troop MMA, Sudbury BJJ, TMAC, Evolution Martial Arts and Ares Kickboxing.  The demo started off with some Submission Only Brazilian Jiu Jitsu matches.  The BJJ matches were super entertaining!!  There was several submission attempts and scrambles that had the crowd cheering! It was a great way to kick off the event.  Sudbury MMA then had 5 athletes competing in the K1 demos.  The demos were very entertaining and a great way to build the fight experience and fight IQ.

I was especially proud of our team for different reasons..  We have such a great support system from the Sudbury MMA Family.  Several members make the trip to North Bay to cheer on and support the team! I received several messages on social media from members asking how their team mates were doing.   Then of course, I was proud of our Fight Team.  We had one fighter take a match up with literally about 20 minutes notice.  We had one fighter make her return to the ring after almost 3 years off.  We had on fighter take a match up, and stand toe to toe against an opponent that is considered to be a big step up for her.  We had two fighters continue on their path to amateur MMA fighting several disciplines and several opponents in one day amassing a ton of competition experience in one afternoon.  We also had one fighter push past his comfort zone and even his own beliefs to have one of his best matches to date.

I could talk a lot more about each of these match ups  but in a nutshell, this is what competition is all about..  spending time with the team, setting goals, crushing them..  or learning what needs to be done to crush them.  Either way, it’s the pursuit of these goals and learning about yourself..  learning who you are in the face of adversity, and ultimately what it takes to overcome the obstacles.  Onto to the next one! The Ontario Open BJJ tournament is next weekend!

See you on the mats

Women's Only Classes

Picture
Last night I had the opportunity to teach in our Women’s Only Jiu Jitsu program.  I typically don’t teach classes in that program as it is specifically for the ladies and they have their own vibe in that class.  My super heavyweight status is typically the vibe that they are trying to avoid in that program.   Firstly, I walked into the class and was surprised with the turn out.  The class has significantly grown since we launched the program about one year ago. These ladies are super dedicated BJJ practitioners and specifically dedicated the women’s only program.  We covered basic collar chokes from the back along with a straight arm lock finish.  Then we covered how to apply these techniques to unassuming loved ones while watching TV, having dinner or any other opportune time that presents!  We had a blast during the class and ended the night with a little rolling.  This is the perfect class for any women just starting out, looking to get in shape and a good handle on the BJJ basics without the fear of huge classes and us super heavyweights!   Sudbury MMA’s women’s only classes are every Tuesday and Thursday night from 7:30pm to 8:30pm.  We hope to see you on the mats!

Record Breaking Attendance

Last night was a great night for all of us at Sudbury MMA!  We broke an attendance record with 167 “sign ins” between both locations. I am so proud of this!  I am proud to share something I love with so many people..  actually to be honest, that statement probably does not apply anymore.

Sudbury MMA has grown so much over the years and has become more than just me (as an instructor) sharing experiences or martial arts with students.  Sudbury MMA has become a network of people who really are like family.  Every night, I am greeted by several children who are super pumped to see me and tell me stories about their day..  I get to laugh and share the stories and struggles of parenting with all the parents…  In training, I get to be the nail and sometimes the hammer with students… I am lucky enough to share the highs and lows of learning, competition and sometimes the lives of so many people.  In closing, I just want to Thank everyone of you who make Sudbury MMA what we are today .. One Team – One Family.

I am the one who is lucky to share these experiences with all of you.  On to the next record breaking night!

See you on the mats!

Saturday is Go Time!!

Picture
The Competition Team has been working hard as we have upcoming fights this weekend.  We will be competing in Muay Thai K1 style striking and of course Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or as it is more commonly known BJJ.  We take pride in being one of the most active gyms in Northern Ontario when it comes to competition. Between our BJJ and Muay Thai program we are on the road almost every weekend.  So far in 2017, our Competition team has gone 6-3 in striking and in BJJ we have brought home multiple medals (Honestly too many to count.. not in a bragging way, its just the truth).

The reason I am proud of our competition team is not only because of the success we have had but also because of the challenges our team is willing to face.  Competition in combat sports brings athletes to a place not everyone gets to experience.  It is not only physically challenging, there is a huge psychological component to this sport as well.  The reality is that not everyone is willing to put themselves in the spotlight…  to be criticized, both in victory or defeat..  (Yes, in victory as well…  how often have we heard, he has no skill, he is just strong etc…)  Athletes subject themselves to the possibility of truly being vulnerable …both to their opponent and the critics…  but that is OK.  I have competed for almost two decades and had several highs and lows..  learning to cope with the lows of competition is a large part of what has prepared me for life..  something I still believe to the core…  if you fall, get up and try again.

As I read back…. This blog may have taken a different direction than originally planned..  I think this is a topic worthy of a Vlog or podcast..  all this to say, this Saturday, we will be in North Bay working with the Action boys..  we cannot wait to enjoy a great day with some great teams and great people!  If you are in the area, stop in and support amateur combat sports..  if you want travel up with the team, we will be leaving the club around 9am Saturday Morning..  Bring your T-Shirt and some cash to hit that chip stand in Sturgeon, because you know that is also on my agenda!!

See you on the mats!

Sudbury MMA Open Mats

Many Academies offer an Open Mat and of course we do as well.  I have a lot of newer students ask me what an open mat is.  Open Mat at Sudbury MMA is basically every Sunday from 12 Noon to 2pm (often runs later than 2pm) and is a time slot that the gym is open to all members for extra training time.  I stopped in today and I was very happy to see more than just training happening at the club.

Open Mat has really become a time for members to not only get some extra training in but also socialize, and spend some quality time with friends and family.  I saw fathers rolling with their sons..  I even got my 3 year old to play some “Arm Bar” games..  then he ran and played with the other kids form the club as one of the parents chased them around the mats being a “Burgan” from the Trolls movie!  Of course, some of the athletes were training for upcoming fights, sparring, hitting the bag to the beat of the music playing in the backround while other students repped out some drills.  There was plenty of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, socializing and family fun happening at Sudbury MMA this afternoon!

This is exactly what our academy is about.  See you on the mats!
