Thanks Guys! This was a tough tournament!! I think all the purple belts
entered the absolute and just about every match was either a decision
or won by a point!! Although i did not win, i am happy with my showing,
again coming back with different strategies to implement in our competiton
class once the CASK Nationals are done.

Mike's Division was also tough.... he worked on some of his goals and it
seemed to be doing well earning him a 3rd place finish.

Kyle had a tough match against an opponnent that made it to the semi
finals in a division of 22 people. He fought well and is now hooked on the
tournament scene. We also learned that we need to beat Donovan up a
little more during classes :) Overall a great experience and looking forward
to the next one!! On another note... it will not be slowing down for our
Muay Thai competitors as after the Nationals... a few of them will be
competing on the Sudbury card on March 24th. As soon as the fights are
confirmed, i will let you know. CASK passport holders, please let me know
in a private message if that weekend is not good for you as I am hoping to
match up as many as possible with Steve. Thanks to everyone who keep
things running at the club working with future champions!

          See you on monday night!

All of us at the club would like to wish Tina Marson a super-fantastic birthday
today! We love you and appreciate all that you do for us!

It's competition time again! The BJJ competing athletes are getting ready to
do some major squashing at the upcoming Ascension BJJ Tournament this
weekend. When I have a solid list of those going to the competition, I will
inform you so that you may wish them the best this week before they leave.

I'm sure, as per the usual, they will be bringing the pain with them. Here's
hoping to a wonderful weekend of making others tap! May they bring home
a wealth of experience, knowledge, memories, and may they have a safe
          trip there and back home.

          We'll miss you guys!

          [JAN 24 2012]

So, this past Sunday was a very important day - both for the club, and for
myself. Lin, Asia and I took the weekend to travel down south, so that I might
attend the Ontario Winter Games Kickboxing training camp.

The training camp itself played host to a number of athletes, yet just over a
dozen coaches that were selected in order to perform Coaching duties during
the Ontario Winter Games. John and I had, about a month ago, put my
application in for one of the available positions. Fortunately, I was selected to
be one of the coaches, and my spot reserved for the training camp!

Getting down there was rough, I won't get into too much detail, but we thought
we were going to end up stuck in Parry Sound. Driving 10kph in a blizzard was
a bitch, but we kept on trucking and eventually made it out of the storm, and to
our safe-zone - being some family members we have in the Hamilton area.

Moving right along, Sunday was awsesome. We got up early, ate early, and got
to the facility early. The host club was the world-class centre Kombat Arts
Academy. I took a couple pics, but ended up getting way too involved to stand
          around snapping photos.

The first order of business was the Coaches meeting. In the meeting we, in
brief, discussed the planning for the OWG - meaning we went over what plans
had been made, and what we, as Coaches were there to do. Services we
provide for the Athletes and so on, many of the key roles we will provide during
the OWG. The meeting also served as a sort of information session, outlining
some very interesting, and crucial Coaching strategies which I plan to attempt
to initiate at the club... should be cool!!! We were also assigned to our Coaching
teams which consist of 2-3 coaches, and a "team leader" - a CASK appointed
Coach that will help us when we get stuck in a situation we're unsure of.

After the Coaches meeting, the Athletes all had their weigh-ins to ensure they
were on-weight, or close to weight. They then were asked to gear up, and warm
up. The brief warm up then lead to them seperating into groups. One group was
asked to go into a side-arena within the host facility, where Coach Samir was
leading a crash course on K-1 rules. This 'course' mainly was focusing on the
clinch... techniques on how to enter the clinch, how to exit the clinch, and what
you can do with your opponent while working on the inside. Shucking, plum,
turning, and knee techniques were demonstrated. All were explained in such a
fashion that all of the Athletes seemed to be able to pick it up, and use the
outlined techniques effectively. Myself, as well as the other coaches assisted
the athletes with their technique, positioning, as well as any other questions
they may have. I found it actually VERY interesting how Coach Samir explained
the techniques, so that people with no K-1 experience might actually have a
good chance at defending the clinch, or adding it to their current repartoire of
          techniques.

I might want to add here that the format of the OWG kickboxing is quite
interesting in that it is open class... what i mean by this is that fighters
that train, and typically compete in LOWKICK contests might end up competing
in K-1 division against a K-1 Athlete.. or even a Full-Contact Athlete. Likewise,
a K-1 Combatant might find him or herself in a bout with a Full-Contact Athlete
under Lowkick rules. It's all pretty much luck-of-the-draw. So a K-1 participant
might find themselves at home in a K-1 match with a Lowkick Athlete... or perhaps
they may land in a Full-Contact bout, which would not allow leg kicks, clinch,
knees, or throws of any kind!!! Pretty crazy and really keeps things interesting.
The Athletes will not know what format their bouts will be, or who their opponents
are until the day before their contests!!!

Anyways, after a very impressive, and informative session lead by Samir
(The Sandman), we moved over to the other hall, where Muz was giving
fundamentals to the group on LOWKICK and Full-Contact competitions. Focusing
a lot on slips, counters, and hand/foot striking. No touching on clinch work was
done, as it was intended to give the K-1 Athletes, who make up the majority of
the lot a chance to gain a better grasp of the new ruleset they may be placed
          under during the Games.

Between both sessions, there were a number of teambuilding exercises run
which really piqued my interest. a LOT of the Athletes, most of whom had no
idea who eachother were at the beginning of the day, ended off cheering for
and with eachother, embracing and high-fiving and all this afterwards. It not
only broke them out of their barriers, but most importantly ended up making
a lot of friends. I was very impressed.

Moving from there, we had a short break (Coffee was PROVIDED!)... Lin showed
up at the facility with some STARBUCKS for MEEEEEE (skinny caramel macciatto
FTW!), thanks again baby. After quickly downing the most awesome beverage,
we were put off into our groups. Our group, along with the other 3, were
assigned a group of athletes and a ring-sized area on the mats where we could
both observe some (NOT hard) sparring under the various rules of the OWG,
while coaching the individual athletes between rounds. Rounds were 2mins in
length, with a 1 minute rest - standard CASK rules, however only 2 rounds per
contest were conducted. I was very impressed with how well our group did.
Both performance-wise, and also in their ability to not go all out and try to
          prove something. SO COOL!

Following the 7 or 8 matches we Coached with our team, we then discussed
individually the different rulesets that will be used at the Games.
We were given 2 rounds of 2min each again, with 1min rest, for each of the
          different rulesets.

The first was Full-Contact rules if I recall correctly. We had a brief about the
rules, then allowed our group 2 minutes to just play around (as in Li Chun/Li
Thai format) to get their grips on it, as we as Coaches walked around, made
pointers, answered questions. During the 1min rest period, we allowed
questions, discussed our observations as a whole, then allowed them a
follow-up 2mins to play again... which again was followed by 1min breakdown,
          and gathering the Athletes thoughts/questions/comments.

We did the same for Lowkick rules, then ended off the session with the same
format for K-1 rules. I found it very important to try to detail some techniques
for ENTERING the clinch, and spent a minute also going over that which Coach
Samir had explained for those individuals not used to K-1 rules competition.

After this, the group as a whole was lead through a thorough stretch and
cooldown - followed by a Q&A session lead by CASK staff, directed to the
Athletes themselves, and their parents (that were in attendance).

We then called it a day, handed out some business cards, chatted a bit about
the club, met a few club owners and Coaches from other schools, then headed
          out.

I'm sure i've missed a lot that i really wanted to include, but all-in-all these were
the more critical points of the day. It was such an awesome day for all the
Coaches, Athletes, and even the CASK staff who worked hard to put together
the training camp seemed to have a great time. I was so impressed by the level
of professionalism everyone carried. Not just the Coaches, but even the
Athletes, their family members that attended... everyone was so open,
passionate, and most importantly friendly to everyone involved.

Nothing more to say than WHAT A GREAT DAY... and i totally look forward to
          the Games in March!!!

Actually, I would lastly just like to say thanks to John most importantly for
opening the door for such an opportunity. This really is going to bring my
Coaching and instructing to a new level I think, and not only just that, but it's
such a wonderful opportunity that very very few can actually say they were
          able to participate in.

          Thanks again!
SEE YOU ALL AT THE CLUB THIS WEEK!

Thank you to all who participated in the Bowling Fundraiser! (Unfortunately I
wasn't able to be there, but) I heard everyone had a super-awesome time
together just hanging out away from the club! - I'm totally jealous.

We are so very excited to annouce that Astin Chambers is a qualifying athlete
for the Ontario Winter Games 2012! Let's all cross our fingers that Astin is
selected to participate! Do it - cross those fingers... are you doing it? do it
harder! Are they turning purple yet? Not hard enough! We will keep you all
posted... but only if you keep those fingers crossed!

Our BJJ athletes are training hard for the Provincial Championship Tournament,
which is coming up at the end of the month. Wish them all luck when you see
them, come in and help them train hard.

Please remember to purchase your Second Annual Sudbury MMA Christmas

Wow! Did our Muay Thai Athletes ever fight hard this past weekend!
Congratulations to all of them for their fabulous efforts! Artem Volkov is now
the 2011 Senior K1 Provincial Champion (-75kg). Jason Lavalle brought home a
Silver in the K1 86kg Division (Senior) and Trinity Antoine is the 2011
Intermediate Light Contact Provincial Champion (-40kg).

Matt and Slacker's fights were stopped by the refs... If they had've let them
keep going, those boys would've kept on fighting - hard! Astin's Low Kick bout
was a difficult battle and he suffered an injury. As a result the medical team did
not allow him to fight on the second day in the K1 bout he was scheduled for.
We certainly bonded well and brought back home some things no one could
every replace: laughter (YES, we even had Artem laughing), memories,
experience, and a stronger will to keep growing and moving forward!

We are SO proud of all of you! It took GREAT COURAGE for you all to represent
Sudbury MMA. We hope that you look forward to doing so again during the
          Nationals!

So happy that the team is back home - safe and sound.

What an AMAZING week it was! Our visit with Senaha Sensei was absolutely

who aren't even involved in the Karate Program.

The week with Senaha Sensei has brought a wealth of knowledge for our

        [JUL 01 2011]
What a crazy week it has been!! Professional fighter and former Sudbury
MMA student, Chris St-Jean was in class all week training and helping out the
guys on taking their game to the next level! Chris even took the time to visit
our sister club and work with one of their amateur fighters with an upcoming
fight. All the students here were excited to have Chris back on the mats and I
even saw a few batman sweeps!! Chris will be fighting in the upcoming
Freedom Fight event here in Sudbury September 10th at the Sudbury arena.
You can bet that Sudbury MMA will be out in full force supporting their boy!!

This was also the last week of training for us at the King street location….
That being said, we have had students working hard all week getting the new
place ready!! Actually, we have had students working hard for the last 2
months!! I am truly grateful for everyone’s help!! We could not have
accomplished this without you!! The new location on Barry Downe is looking
pretty SICK!! We remind everyone that they are welcome to attend our
prayer ceremony tomorrow (Saturday) at 3pm. We will be enjoying this time
with friends and family and be there most of the day Saturday as there is still
          lots to do!!

Monday is GO TIME at the new location… we are also starting our slightly
adjusted schedule as well so make sure to check it out on the website … we
now have an MMA class, No-Gi grappling class and more advanced BJJ classes!!
We have also updated our contact information and phone number so these
changes will be reflected on the website sometime Sunday night!! Check it
out!! I cannot wait to see everyone at the new place!! And on behalf of all the
instructors at Sudbury MMA, I want to thank everyone that has supported
us and continues to supports us! I cannot wait to see what’s next!!!

          See you on Barry Downe!!!

Former Sudbury MMA training partner and instructor Chris (Batman) St. Jean
has won yet another Professional MMA fight. Now training at Ottawa Academy
of Martial Arts, Chris is riding a 3-fight win streak showcasing yet another fine
display of groundwork. Batman's win came at just 1min 55sec of the first round,
via rear naked choke which was set up nicely by a solid mounted elbow. This
win extends his professional record to 4-2. Congratulations, Chris! After
speaking with John, Batman may even come back up north in a couple weeks
to give us a few lessons. More details on that to follow!

        [JUN 16 2011]
It's been a few weeks, but finally John is back after his trip to Eastern Europe
and has been teaching classes. He has brought back some very interesting
drills and techniques he has been working in both Muay Thai, and Brazilian Jiu
Jitsu. Weather has been heating up, but it hasn't stopped the training - it's
great to see everyone out and working hard!

Keep in mind, we are changing locations as of July 4th - this means we will have
no classes July 1-3 as we finalize the transition. Following that weekend, on the
Monday we will all be training at 850 BarryDowne Road, unit 301 (third floor).
          Very exciting times!

NO CLASSES this Saturday, May 24th as well as Monday, May 23rd.
This weekend is the May 2-4 Long weekend (you already knew that, I'm sure...).
We will not be holding any classes over the long weekend (most of you are probably
going to camp to light fireworks and roast marshmallows anyway - we'd be sad and lonely if no one came
to class, especially since we wouldn't have marshmallows... )
.

Our normal class schedule resumes Tuesday, May 24th. We hope that the
long weekend allows you all the opportunity to get in some excellent quality
time with friends and family and some well deserved relaxation. Looking forward
to seeing you back at the club on Tuesday!

Spring is indeed a time for growth for many things... including Sudbury MMA!
Yes, that's right! We're growing too! WE ARE MOVING! Sudbury MMA is currently
in the process of moving to a new location. We are so excited to announce
          that we will soon call
850 Barry Downe Road, unit 301 our home.

We will be located just south of Hawthorne Drive on the east side of Barry
          Downe Road;
2500 square feet of space which includes 1266 square feet of matted training
area as well as an additional 400 square feet for our 20x20 ring. Our projected
move date is July 1st, 2011... which should give us enough time to get the new
          place set up nicely.
We hope you're as excited as we are!

We are extremely grateful and honoured to have had the company of MAS
Thai Boxing this past weekend in the club. The Kru Chris Seminar weekend
started off on Friday night with Muay Thai demonstrations with members from
both MAS Thai Boxing and Sudbury MMA. All participants did an absolutely fine
job! Good work guys. Demonstrations were followed by an intense training
session lead by Kru Chris Kew and his team. Saturday and Sunday, MAS
Thai Boxing worked Sudbury MMA hard with 4 hour training sessions and
          testing.

Thank you so much Kru Chris and MAS Thai Boxing for an exceptional weekend
of fun and education! We look forward to our next opportunity to learn from
you all! Such an amazing weekend it has been.

Many thanks also goes out to those who came in to watch the demonstations
and show support for Sudbury MMA as well as the beautiful sport that is Muay
Thai. We hope that you will come back to watch again!

I must apologize for not being around this week... I have been crazy sick! But
that's okay, get it out of the way now before the competition season starts!
Classes have been excellent! The boys have been pushing people hard and
there has been some record attendances in class. Make sure to introduce
yourselves to our new members. I will be taking it easy over the weekend
but will be back with a training vengeance on Monday!

One week into the New Year and you can feel the energy at the club is
vibrating! It is awesome seeing everyone back and training hard. We would
also like to welcome all of our new members! 2011 will be a great year for
Sudbury MMA! Remember that if you are competing at the CASK event in
February, you will need to bring in your deposit this upcoming week, or you
will miss out. Training for the athletes competing at this event will be ramping
up! Come in and help these guys. That is what makes a TEAM!

          See you on the mats!
