		John Cole *[Chief Instructor]* > CREDENTIALS > COMPETITION > VIDEOS Our Chief Instructor John Cole is a very experienced, talented, and well rounded Martial Artist with over 20 years of involvement. Beginning with Tiger Style Kung Fu at the age of 12, John quickly realised that training was something he would continue for years to come. Moving forward, during his High School years, John began training with the Freestyle Wrestling team, and quickly achieved a great deal of success within the artform. Winter Ontario Games Competition, receiving medal status at the Provincial level, finishing in sixth place in the National Championships, John certainly proved that his passion for grappling was greater than anything else. Once he had solidified such a position within Wrestling, John wished to compliment this ability with a more striking-focused martial art and as such, in 1991 John began training in the traditional form of Okinawan Karate. After 5 years of consistant training, in 1996 John travelled to Okinawa, Japan. Once there, he was blessed with the priviledge of training with Shigetoshi Senaha Sensei, as well as training in Ryu Kyu Kobudo. Also while there, he learned from and trained with such masters as Meitoku Yagi, Shoshin Nagamine, and Akamine Eisuke. From meeting such masters, John was inspired to begin teaching others in his arts, and upon his return to Canada in September of the same year, opened his school. John has since returned to Okinawa, Japan to train with Senaha Sensei and other masters in order to increase his skill, and in 2004, was awarded his 5th Degree Black Belt from Senaha Sensei. In 2005, John was given the opportunity to expand his horizons, participating in his first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Seminar and in the following year was introduced to Renzo Gracie Black Belt, Pat Cooligan. Shortly thereafter in summer of 2009, John's school, Sudbury MMA was honoured as being an affiliate school of Team Renzo Gracie Ottawa (OAMA). Since that time, he has met and trained with several BJJ legends such as Carlos Gracie Jr., Renzo Gracie, Igor Gracie, Holles Gracie, Gregor Gracie, Roger Gracie, Braulio Estima, and of course, Pat Cooligan. After years of dedication and training, in October of 2010, John was awarded the rank of Renzo Gracie Purple Belt. John has also had a number of Mixed Martial Arts contests, and in 2007 while preparing for an MMA fight, he met and befriended Leroi De Leon. Kru Lee, a local Muay Thai instructor with over 15 years experience quickly became very close to John, training with him for the next 3 years extensively. Additionally, in 2008 John met Kru Chris Kew from MAS Thai Boxing - Cambridge. As with Kru Lee, Kru Chris is a very influential instructor, and has been a key component to the development of the Muay Thai program currently offered at Sudbury MMA. Kru Chris has since awarded John Cole a Blue Pratchia in his Muay Thai system, and John has acheived his Level I Thai Boxing Coach Certification, and has acquired his CASK (Canadian Amateur Sport Kickboxing) Coaching Certification. In May of 2011, John had the oppotrunity to travel to Eastern Europe, where he trained extensively with a number of talented and skilled individuals. As a competitor, John has not stopped since his early wrestling contests. Having travelled extensively in order to compete at the highest possible levels, he has acquired an undefeated Professional MMA record within King of the Cage (3-0). Also winning a number of amateur Muay Thai contests, as well as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournaments, John's competitive drive is a welcome compliment to his friendly teaching style, and casual approach to new members at Sudbury MMA. His proud achievements such as his Bronze Medal at the prestigious World Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Mundials 2009 as a Blue Belt only add to his personality, and his open mind and regular training with his good friends and masters not only benefit him personally, but in turn become the benefit of his students through his teaching style.
